PDA Conference: Needle Protection and Smart Auto Injector Labels

The Universe of Pre-filled Syringes & Injection Devices (PDA) conference is focused on pre-filled syringes and injection systems. This year, the annual worldwide industry event was held at Huntington Beach, California, in October, providing a platform for discussion of the latest developments in regulations, technologies and market trends in this field. Our colleagues from Schreiner MediPharm attended the conference, presenting NFC applications and multifunctional solutions for pens and auto injectors as well as the Needle-Trap needle protection label and other solutions.

Since its market launch in 2009, Needle-Trap by Schreiner MediPharm has become a trusted, groundbreaking needle protection system for pre-filled syringes, and has been successfully established in numerous markets. One of the primary benefits of the active system is that users themselves can control the activation of the needle protection. The design principle of Needle-Trap is unique. The plastic needle trap is an integral component of the label and serves to secure the needle after the injection. The label can be applied to standard pre-filled syringes.

The multi-functional labels developed by Schreiner MediPharm for SHL Medical auto injectors are a current application example of specialty labels for injection systems, in which safety and ease of use for the patient are of paramount importance. The innovative label solutions underscore the exacting demands made on the injection systems in terms of quality and patient orientation. As a novel feature to assist the user, an NFC chip for interactive applications has been integrated in the label for the Amber® model. The marking labels perform important additional functions which are precisely tailored to meet the requirements of the manufacturer and the needs of the users. To improve grip, an anti-slip varnish was used to prevent slipping during the injection. An integrated hologram helps the user identify the product as an original. A printed QR code provides a link to a website when being read via a smartphone.
